Social Media and misinformation

While we are living in an age of rapid technological development, social media is a part of our lives. However, there is a great confusion whether what is posted is true or not. Hence, the restriction of some publications may have its pros and cons on social media platforms.

To begin with, such a kind of ban can positively affect the social media. In fact, should this policy stabilize as a usual control, people can be sure that the content provided will be reliable and safe to use. This way, only valid information will be reproduced, so people can strive in learning on it without spending extra time verifying its reliability. Hence, everyday stuff such as school assignments will be considered a piece of cake. As a consequence, fake news or conspiracy theories will not be part of our everyday surfing on the Net.

On the other end of the spectrum, such a policy may have a negative impact on both informative platforms and the society. Firstly, by posing this restriction, the social media companies will have to encounter the angry public, which may talk about violation of the right of free press. In practical terms, this may be due to the fact that the only field on which each and every person can express their thoughts will be under severe control. Moreover, this policy reminds people of authoritarian methods of censorship making them feel more furious.

To conclude with, the policy of banning, or better, controlling people’s posts on social media has to be dealt with prudence by the responsibles. Hence, only when the happy medium is stricken, will such policies occur ; only under severe observance of the free press and the reliable information.
